Exhibition Information

"Play Ball: The Art of America's Favorite Pastime" is an incredible installation that celebrates the most wonderful summer tradition of all--a day, or days, spent at the ballpark. From stadium landmarks to notable players and teams, to our own memories of pick-up games' from yesteryear, the SAA's "Play Ball" exhibition is a celebration of contemporary artists and their interpretation of America's beloved game.

"Play Ball" will be displayed in the Springfield Art Association's Gallery of Art from June 25 through August 21, 2010. The opening reception for the exhibition will be on Friday, June 25th from 5:30 to 7:00pm.

The Gallery of Art is located within the Springfield Art Association at 700 North 4th Street in Springfield, Illinois. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10am to 5pm, and Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

• Vintage Baseball Game – July 3, from 12 to 2pm
Complete with rules from the 1890s, this outing will be the most exciting event to kick off your Fourth of July weekend! Bring your friends, a pennant and a picnic to the SAA and camp out on the Front Lawn of Edwards Place to see the game. Refreshments will also be available, along with kids' crafts, so come on out and celebrate all things baseball, Mom and apple pie at the Art Association this Independence Day!

• Family Art Night – July 22, 5:30 to 9pm
Gather up all your art fans for a baseball-themed Family Art Night! Crafts, games and activities will decorate the tables throughout our Condell Studio, while the “Play Ball” Exhibition is on display in the Gallery. Tours of Edwards Place will also be available, so come out to the Art Association for a triple play of art, fun and baseball!

• Little League Invitational – August 5, 4 to 8pm
Come one, come all Little Leaguers to the Art Association to view the coolest baseball art show around, and then spend the early evening making some crafts that would easily win an artsy National Championship for creativity!

The SAA used six different works of art on our “Play Ball” mailing, including five paintings and a quilt, to represent the work seen in this show. The artist and their artwork are listed below.
